After suffering their lone defeat since entering district play to Brewer’s Lady Bears on Friday, Jan. 5, the Ladycats trounced Azle on Tuesday, Jan. 9, to solidify their hold on second place in the District 5-5A standings.
Aledo’s 53-35 rout of the Lady Hornets improved their overall record to 21-8 and 4-1 in district.
Senior guard Natalie Anderson had her best individual performance of the season. Like a thoroughbred at The Preakness, Anderson hustled her way up and down the floor while depositing a season-high 15 points to lead Aledo’s offense.
The Ladycats bested Azle every quarter, starting off with the opening frame where Aledo put up a dozen points to take an early 12-9 lead.
As the second quarter got underway, the Ladycats found their groove. Defensively, they shut out the Lady Hornets, allowing just five points over eight minutes of play. Offensively, Aledo tacked on 16 points of their own to take a lopsided 28-14 lead into the half.
In the second half Aledo’s advantage was slim, as they outpaced the Lady Hornets by just a bucket in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. However, the second quarter ended up being sufficient to put the game out of reach for Azle.
Next up for the Ladycats is a trip to Granbury on Friday, Jan. 12, where they meet up with the Lady Pirates, also 4-1 in league play. Tipoff is 6:15 pm.
